minor updates in my blog

I have a new virtual pet that's living on my homepage blog.

It's the cutie Hamster Ashotik! He will keep you company while you're reading my blog :)

You've probably seen and even played with the fish that I had here till this. I've let them free to swim in Sevan.

So my hamster can run in his wheel, drink water, eat the food you feed him by clicking your mouse. He will wash his face and then get back to the wheel (alternatively, you can click the center of the wheel to make him get back on it). He's independent minded and sometimes just does what he wants, so you need to accept his character :)

Besides, I've added the formspring widget so you can ask me anonymous questions. I'll answer if I like them :P

and I've added franseren.com on my reading list :) The author is new to blogging will appreciate any feedback ;)

2009 wrap-up: blogging :: overview of my most interesting posts

2009 was a good year for me, in terms of blogging. I think I managed to refine my direction and make it the way so the blog can be interesting to a wider range of people and not only for my friends.
Here I will briefly write about the most notable posts in my blog for 2009 and write my observations on the popularity of some of them and its reasons.

Armenian Way
Relatively popular were the postz describing Armenian habits (New Year Celebration, Weddings favors etc). Today I found that one of my friends was tagged in a profile pic uploaded by some girl as a New Year card and the pic was from my New Year Celebration post :)

How-To and Lifehacks
Not surprisingly, posts about some hacks and "how-to"s were popular too (About Last.FMHow I fixed my phone, Vacations in Adjara: Survival Guide, Software iRecommend).
My recent post on self-directed study was also quite popular and I'm happy hearing that it was handy for some people.

Concert, Movie and Book Reviews
One of my favorite types of posts is writing reviews about the concerts and movies I have attended. My post on Garou concert and pics were found by hundreds of Garou fans all over the world and pics were used in several of his fan websites :) I also wrote about Tigran Hamasyan's and Michel Legrand's concerts.
My review of Taxi Eli Lava movie was very popular in spring. I wrote a review of "Color of the Pink City" book in Armenian and it was also quite popular, and even the author liked it :)
I also wrote my impressions of BarCamp EVN 09.

Posts with own photos
I try to post with own photos, and I noticed that my photos are also quite appreciated :) Like in the posts about Yerevan 2791 CelebrationsCafesjian Center for the Arts opening and Trip to Sevan.

My Thoughts
I also tried to write my thoughts on several things, like "My thoughts on the attitude towards people and judging", and "About Girls Sitting Alone in a Cafe" and losing friends and also the shopaholism. I am particularly happy for the comments on these types of posts.

Changes
In September 2009 I completely redesigned my blog, making it more glamorous and interesting (i think :) I also finally wrote a small text about myself.

Challenges
The biggest challenge this year has been the same procrastination and also the growing number of readers that forces me to write better, so I need more time and efforts for that.
My innocent and apolitical post about April 24 attracted a Turkish internet zombie (one of those who are searching posts about Armenian Genocide and then trying to flood them with bullshit, all from the same opera) who started to post nasty and irrelevant comments which made me turn the comment pre-moderation feature on.

Star tattoo beats all
The most popular post of the year was the one with my tattoo (far from being great) pic on it. I guess it had a terrific PageRank and all seekers of shooting star tattoos seem to have visited my blog :)

Improvements
This year I started to read blogs on blogging (haha) and took some steps towards improving my writing skills (even took a training on that :) and I found some really useful information in the blog problogger.net and the book "31 Days to Build a Better Blog".

I hope that my posts were interesting useful to my readers. I will work in the direction of writing more useful posts in 2010.

Self-education. Useful tips and resources for self-directed learners

Some people need new knowledge like food. Constant development is one of the requirements for the 21st century people. Everybody can dedicate some time in their daily routine for self development - learning new things, brushing skills. I even believe that if you don't sharpen your skills and train the brain with new things, it may rust :)

Throughout years I've been exploring the process of own learning and have got into a conclusion that I best learn something by myself, rather than being taught. I'm a "self-directed learner" type. Are you also? It yes, even if it's true for just some part, this post will be a great resource for you - full with self-learning tips and resources.

If you are more for the knowledge and not for the diploma/certificate or a maybe-attractive line in the CV, you will probably consider starting learning something extra.

Dedicate some time for learning something more than just your profession, an additional knowledge that will someday become handy for sure. Be it an additional foreign language or a hobby in any field.

What awaits you below:
  • Benefits of self-directed learning
  • Self-discipline and motivation
  • Tips for self-directed learning
  • Useful resources
  • Take advantage of free trainings

Fighting procrastination or Need of Focus

I started to write this post about a week ago. I needed to focus on writing about focus :)

So! It appeared so that the whole January I was unemployed and had a lot of free time for finishing my unfinished tasks, making new year resolutions, self reflection and everything in general.
Still, i haven't succeeded in completing all of the tasks that i have set for myself, productivity as well as satisfaction of how i spent the day was sadly low.

The saying that the more you have to do, the more you manage to do is sadly true for me.
Some years ago I used to study for Master's, had a full-time job + one part time (classes, teaching) + self-studying Italian. But now, when i don't have any assignment other than doing housework, I feel that i'm not doing anything valuable and i'm not even bringing my tasks to finish.
Since the beginning of January i started several things that i still didn't finalize. I left them undone and it's like a stone hanging from my neck.

Months ago i started to read the famous "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" by David Allen and tried to implement it, but I failed.
The basic concept of GTD is getting all those commitments, bits of information and must-dos out of your head and into a trusted system. I tried different tools for that but it didn't work. I couldn't get all that in one place and couldn't force myself checking that one information repository constantly.
In fact, GTD has got many fans and many people write about it, make applications for it. It's simple, seems easy but in fact, you're spending more time on collecting, organizing, planning than actually doing anything. You need to change a lot of your habits to adapt to GTD. So this method certainly has its weaknesses. The following article gives more opinions: What is wrong with GTD? In any case it's worth reading since personally for me, it helped to realize many things about productivity and planning.

Then i read a lot of posts that came across in my Reader, and learned a lot from them. For example:
Then i realized the main reason of the failure. The multitasking isn't always favorable. Especially when i have to write something, make something, i'm being badly distracted by gtalk conversations, email notifications, unread items in Google Reader, etc... I have read lots and lots of articles on productivity and getting things done and analyzing all the information i got, i made the most important conclusion: I need to FOCUS.

And here are my follow-up points:
  • Do a planning for 5 years (inspired by "What would you do with five years?")
  • When writing tasks, write them in S.M.A.R.T. goals format *.
  • Be online only when it's necessary and there's time and wish to talk (gtalk, odnoklassniki, etc)
  • Connect to the internet only when it's necessary
  • When writing, reading or working on smth, leave only the windows and applications necessary for that. close all others.
  • Check the to-do lists in the morning and in the evening,
  • Check the email 4 times a day: morning, lunch, after work, before sleep.
  • Clean-up the Google Reader from time-killing useless feeds and leave only the ones that are necessary and are enough to read daily and setup time for reading feeds, morning for and before sleep, for example
  • Setup daily and weekly things to do that would include gym, reading, movies, etc...
  • When there's need for motivation and good mood, put on nice music on shuffle and sing aloud :)
  • Don't leave open tabs in FF or Chrome!
  • Define ONE place for writing tasks and plans. Here's a nice list of GTD tools.

* From AIESEC, among all other useful things i've learned, is the goal-setting and especially the S.M.A.R.T. goals, what a wonderful invention of humankind :) SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.

And now i'm setting a SMART objective to plan the tasks i have written and set smart goals for all of them.
S: Write the goals in SMART format
M: All of the goals have timing and a detailed plan
A: It is achievable :)
R: Sure it is realistic
T: I put a deadline Sunday midnight.

So what are you doing now? about micro-blogging, twittering, status messages etc...

This question should be answered differently depending on who's asking or what is the time frame of the question.

--If it asked my friend who I'm chatting with quite often, who's aware of my daily life, i'd answer:
    • reading a project management literature related to the recent changes in my company.
--If it was asked by a cousin whom i meet on family occasions - birthdays etc, i'd say:
    • I'm on the same job - managing website projects.
--If it was asked by my course-mates whom I last saw 2 years ago on graduation, i'd tell them:
    • I'm working.. mid-management position, right by profession. Not married yet :)
--If it was asked by school-mate, whom i encounter once in several years, i'd answer:
    • Graduated with Master's, working! Not married yet :) /don't get surprised, 90% of this kind of people asking about myself actually want to know if I'm married and have kids already/
--If it was asked by smb whom I met for the first time in my life, i'd probably reply:
    • None of your business! :D ,- but seriously, i always get stuck by this question trying to guess what activities does the 'interviewer' expect to hear me telling about...
    so what is twitter?

    some twitter fun :)

A Beautiful Revolution by Andre Jordan

I'm presenting Andre Jordan with his blog "A Beautiful Revolution". It's been a while since I'm following his blog finding some of his works via image bookmarking systems like ffffound.com. He has got some nice postcards and stories spiced with a good sense of humor and irony. Here are some of them that i like:

    about this blog

during my 8+ years online i have created a number of blogs but at the end only one of them survived. It's a private blog for friends only and it's a place for expressing my random thoughts. (it's live since April 2005 with 796 posts).

I do care who is reading my blog and why, that's why care about its privacy... another reason is that i'm not always sure that my brilliant thoughts need to be available to anybody :D I mean i don't usually write meaningful things but i will try to do so in current blog :)

The aim of this blog is t show my daily learnings, things i liked from the web and what i live with.
