It's kind of similar to Sigur Ros and Mogwai (from what i know).
"It's an American instrumental post-rock band from Texas. The band has garnered popularity beyond the post-rock scene for their cinematic, elaborately developed guitar work, narratively styled instrumentals, what they refer to as "cathartic mini-symphonies," and their enthusiastic and emotional live shows." (from the Wiki)
On the russian version of their last.fm page there's a note about the band's name:
"Название коллектива “Explosions In The Sky” родилось в ночь 4 июля 1999 года. Вся Америка праздновала «День Независимости». А четверо музыкантов смотрели на ночное небо, разорванное многочисленными салютам и фейерверками."Some remarks:
- The song "Your Hand in Mine" was played during a look back at the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony on NBC.
- "First Breath After Coma" was used in the trailer for the 2005 film Shopgirl.
- The title track from Placebo's Sleeping With Ghosts contains a reference to the band's name. (This is my absolute favorite song of Placebo)
